This post could all be because my emotions are a little mixed up due to lack of Cigarettes but I digress, there’s been something bothering me already in my time in SL and that is the judgements people make of you based on your Rez Date.
I know, I make the same judgements too, it’s true. I see someone born yesterday and automatically think N00B ALERT, but I usually give them the benefit of the doubt, especially if they look as if they’ve gone through as much trouble as I have to make sure they look presentable and learn basic SL ettiquette, but I’ve found a lot of people turn into complete (excuse my french) assholes around someone who’s only been in the world a few days, even if they have learnt the ropes.
I’ve been in a lot of the newbie hangouts and seen how some people react to new residents and it’s shocking, especially the ones who go out of their way to completely ruin their Second Life experience and drive them away for good. I find they bombard these area’s with comments and spam that really would be enough to turn away even the most strong-willed of new players. I was in Isabel a couple of days back and someone, equipped with a prim-penis had completely filled the place with giant boxes. No one could move or get around, nevermind get to any of the information they provide to help new players become good members of Second Life society. Were these people not new once themselve, or did were they spawned with the knowledge of the ins and outs of every internet community known to man? I serious doubt it was the latter.
I am guilty enough of sticking people in the n00b category, such as men who have been on one day, still dressed in n00b gear, asking me if they can have free pixel sex, or telling me they love me (though this is not specific to n00bs). I’ve had people tell me (not even ask) to send them anything from Lindens to items of clothing. These are the things I know make the entire new resident community look bad, but even within that mess of people who really should stick to sorting out their first life instead of creating a second, there are people who really are trying to learn and become part of something and I think those people need to be given a chance.
For SL to become better, the metaverse needs to expand and more people need to fill it. To drive people away is absurd, those people will be the next generation of creators, designers and sim owners that will ensure Second Life continues to be the place we love today. If those people are put off before they even begin, eventually Second Life will die out and become lost in the internet like an one hit wonder we barely recognise.
